Alain Brandeleer naît à la clinique Édith Cavell à Bruxelles avec une particularité : le syndrome des brides amniotiques a laissé sa main gauche sans doigts. Ses parents, tous deux joueurs de tennis, l'élèvent sans jamais prononcer le mot “handicap” — seulement le mot “différence.”
Alain Brandeleer was born at the Édith Cavell clinic in Brussels with a particularity: amniotic band syndrome left his left hand without fingers. His parents, both tennis players, raised him without ever using the word “handicap” — only the word “difference.”
Il traverse l'enfance avec la main dans la poche — non pour se cacher, mais pour observer qui mérite qu'il se révèle. Il subit des dizaines d'opérations en silence. À 14 ans, il joue en double avec Ilie Nastase contre Jimmy Connors. Certaines limites ne sont pas permanentes.
He moved through childhood with his hand in his pocket — not to hide, but to observe who was worth revealing himself to. He endured dozens of surgeries in silence. At 14, he played doubles with Ilie Nastase against Jimmy Connors. Some limits are not permanent.
Alain a 11 ans quand sa mère meurt d'un cancer. Debout derrière son cercueil, les mains dans les poches, il se dit : “Si Dieu a laissé faire ça, alors Dieu n'existe pas.” Il ne pleure pas. Il se fige. Son monde se fissure.
Alain was 11 years old when his mother died of cancer. Standing behind her coffin, hands in his pockets, he told himself: “If God let this happen, then God doesn't exist.” He did not cry. He froze. His world cracked open.
Son père — courageux, atteint de sclérose en plaques — maintient la famille unie. Chaque grande décision de sa vie sera prise sous une question silencieuse : “Est-ce que Maman serait fière de moi ?”
His father — courageous, himself battling multiple sclerosis — held the family together. Every major decision of his life was made under a quiet question: “Would Mama be proud of me?”
Ma maman m'avait appris qu'aucun obstacle n'est insurmontable.
My mother had taught me that no obstacle is insurmountable.
L'adolescence frappe fort. Attiré trop tôt par le monde des adultes, perdu dans les nuits. Son père lui arrange un apprentissage dans le tannage du cuir, en Angleterre, en Hollande, en Italie. Le travail lui donne une direction. Il intègre l'entreprise familiale et ne regarde plus en arrière.
Adolescence hit hard. Drawn too early into the adult world, lost in the nightlife. His father arranged an apprenticeship in leather tanning — in England, Holland, Italy. Work gave him direction. He joined the family business and never looked back.
Il découvre aussi le golf, le karting — et l'océan. Il remportera le Championnat de Belgique de karting avec un plâtre sur la main droite cassée et une main gauche déficiente, pendant que ses adversaires tentent de le pousser hors de la piste.
He also discovered golf, karting — and the ocean. He went on to win the Belgian Karting Championship with a cast on his broken right hand and a deficient left hand, while his rivals tried to force him off the track.
Il construit une vie entière : un mariage, une famille, une carrière. Son fils Gary naît le 14 février 1985 — le jour de la Saint-Valentin. “Le plus beau cadeau d'amour.” La paternité devient la plus grande chose qui lui soit jamais arrivée.
He built a full life: a marriage, a family, a career. His son Gary was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1985. “The most beautiful gift of love.” Fatherhood became the greatest thing that had ever happened to him.
Sa femme Brigitte se bat contre le cancer pendant des années. Il reste à ses côtés jusqu'à son dernier souffle, en juillet 2010. Trois mois après sa mort, il plonge avec des grands requins blancs au large de Guadalupe. Il se reconstruit comme il sait le faire : en allant dans le grand bain.
His wife Brigitte fought cancer for years. He stood by her until her last breath in July 2010. Three months after her death, he dove with great white sharks off Guadalupe Island. He rebuilt himself the only way he knew: by going into the deep end.
Dans un chenal étroit du delta de l'Okavango, un large crocodile saisit le bras droit d'Alain. Il le fait tournoyer comme une poupée de chiffon, le projette hors de l'eau, le tire sous la surface. Son ami Steve Benjamin reste dans l'eau à ses côtés, refusant de le lâcher.
In a narrow channel of the Okavango Delta, a large crocodile seized Alain's right arm. It spun him like a rag doll, threw him out of the water, dragged him under. His friend Steve Benjamin stayed in the water beside him, refusing to let go.
Quarante jours à l'hôpital de Johannesburg. Des dizaines de fractures. Les médecins parlent d'amputation. Il dit à l'anesthésiste : “Si vous devez amputer, laissez-moi sous anesthésie. Regardez ma main gauche — vous comprendrez pourquoi je ne peux pas vivre sans la droite.”
Forty days in a Johannesburg hospital. Dozens of fractures. Doctors talked of amputation. He told the anesthesiologist: “If you must amputate, leave me under. Look at my left hand — you'll understand why I cannot live without the right one.”
Ils sauvent le bras. C'est là, pour la première fois, qu'Alain regarde vraiment sa main gauche — celle qu'il avait passé sa vie entière à ignorer — et ressent de la gratitude pour elle.
They saved the arm. And it was then, for the first time, that Alain truly looked at his left hand — the one he had spent his entire life ignoring — and felt gratitude for it.
Si tu le fais seulement pour toi, tu n'y arriveras pas. Il te faut une cause plus grande que ta douleur.
If you do it only for yourself, you won't make it. You need a cause bigger than your pain.
Après des mois de chirurgies et de rééducation, Alain décide de traverser la Manche. Son mentor Henri Suetens lui dit : “Si tu le fais seulement pour toi, tu n'y arriveras pas. Il te faut une cause plus grande que ta douleur.”
After months of surgeries and recovery, Alain decided to swim the English Channel. His mentor Henri Suetens told him: “If you do this only for yourself, you won't make it. You need a cause bigger than your pain.”
Des complications le forcent à se réorienter. Le 19 août 2015, il traverse le détroit de Gibraltar en 3h56 — passant d'Europe en Afrique — au profit de La Tête hors de l'Eau, son association soutenant les enfants nés avec des différences aux membres.
Complications forced him to redirect. On August 19, 2015, he crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 3 hours and 56 minutes — passing from Europe to Africa — raising funds for La Tête hors de l'Eau, his association supporting children born with limb differences.
Sur le rivage se trouvait Miguelito — un enfant portant la même condition qu'Alain à la naissance, rencontré trois ans plus tôt sur une plage d'Espagne. Cet échange de regards l'a porté jusqu'à l'autre rive.
On the shore stood Miguelito — a child born with the same condition as Alain, met three years earlier on a beach in Spain. That exchange of glances carried him across.
Au sommet de son engagement philanthropique, Alain est trompé par un ami d'enfance qui fabrique la participation d'un champion de tennis de renommée mondiale pour un grand événement caritatif. Alain a déjà engagé des ressources considérables. L'événement s'effondre. Les dettes suivent. Son appartement est vendu. Il n'a plus rien.
At the height of his philanthropic work, Alain was deceived by a childhood friend who fabricated the participation of a world-famous tennis champion for a major charity event. Alain had already committed enormous resources. The event collapsed. Debt followed. His apartment was sold. He had nothing.
Il quitte Bruxelles pour l'Égypte.
He left Brussels for Egypt.
Le crocodile, ce n'était rien. Le crocodile n'était pas un ami.

En janvier 2019, Alain arrive à Sharm El-Sheikh avec presque rien. Pendant des mois, il vit comme un fantôme. Lentement, le soleil, le désert et la mer Rouge le ramènent à lui-même. Il reconstruit son foyer de zéro. Il se reconstruit lui-même.
In January 2019, Alain arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh with almost nothing. For months he lived like a ghost. Slowly, the sun, the desert, and the Red Sea pulled him back. He rebuilt his home from scratch. He rebuilt himself.
Pendant le COVID-19, il lance You Care We Care — une initiative citoyenne où des particuliers donnent leurs maisons de vacances aux soignants épuisés. 460 semaines de repos offertes au personnel médical belge. Il dirige tout depuis les coulisses.
During COVID-19, he launched You Care We Care — a grassroots initiative where people donated their vacation homes to exhausted healthcare workers. 460 weeks of rest were given to medical staff across Belgium. He ran it entirely from behind the scenes.
Puis vient le moment le plus sombre. Seul, ruiné, isolé par la pandémie, il envisage de nager au large et de ne jamais revenir. C'est l'image de son fils Gary qui l'arrête. Il se lève, se rase, s'habille, et choisit la vie.
Then came the darkest moment. Alone, financially ruined, isolated by the pandemic, he contemplated swimming out and never coming back. It was the image of his son Gary that stopped him. He got out of bed, shaved, dressed, and chose life.
J'ai failli me noyer pour éviter de me noyer.
I nearly drowned to avoid drowning.
Alain se reconstruit. Il retrouve l'amour — Caroline, une femme élégante et ancrée qui plonge dans son monde à bras ouverts, littéralement : elle traversera avec lui le détroit Corse-Sardaigne. Il devient grand-père.
Alain rebuilt. He found love again — Caroline, an elegant and grounded woman who dove into his world with open arms, literally: she crossed the Corsica-Sardinia strait with him by sea. He became a grandfather.
À 65 ans, il traverse le canal entre Ibiza et Formentera — 23 km — pour soutenir Ocean Cleanup. Non pas pour se prouver quelque chose. Pour la première fois : juste pour la cause.
At 65, he crossed the channel between Ibiza and Formentera — 23 km — to support Ocean Cleanup. Not to prove something. For the first time: just for the cause.
Il partage aujourd'hui son temps entre Sharm El-Sheikh et la Belgique. Il guide des personnes à travers le désert, partage ses océans, raconte son histoire. Et il est prêt à la raconter depuis des scènes.
